10 Things People Forget When Moving House in Singapore

You’ve prepped and planned for your change of residence, sweated and stressed about the logistics of packing that many items into so few boxes. Now your Singapore moving day has finally arrived yet you feel as though something is missing, you’ve forgotten something and you just can’t put your finger on it.

Moving days are hectic, which makes them the perfect scenario to lose track of things. You will have plenty to do during the weeks prior and following your move, and you’re likely to forget a few things. We’ve compiled a helpful checklist to help you get on top of the big Singapore move.

An Open Bag For Your First Stay

Pack a bag with all your essentials for the first night in your new home. You should include a flashlight, batteries, toilet paper, toiletries, blankets, towels, mobile phone chargers, and a fresh change of clothes for the following morning. After a good night’s sleep, you will be ready to continue unpacking.

Cancel Memberships

Cancelling your gym or club membership might not be one of your priorities but it should be. You don’t want to have money charged to your account each month for a service you’re not using.

Return Borrowed Items

If you have borrowed anything from your neighbours, make sure to return it. Check you don’t have any books from the library, DVDs or hired items to avoid accidentally packing them.

Personal Documentation

Despite their importance, personal records are among the most forgotten items during a house move. Pack medical, dental and veterinary records. If you’re moving to Singapore internationally, make sure you take extra copies of apostilled marriage and birth certificates as you might need them in your adopted country.

Dry Cleaning

It is estimated that 15 per cent of clothes taken to the dry cleaner’s are never claimed by their owners. A good portion of those clothes are owned by people who moved away and simply forgot to pick them up.

Valuable Items

Many people keep their most valuable possessions in safe deposit boxes or hidden places. It is very easy to forget about them when you are packing your belongings so make a note.

Keys

People often forget to both take and leave their keys. Keep car keys and key sets for cabinets, sheds, wardrobes and safety deposit boxes in the same place where you have the keys for your new home. Remember to leave behind all your sets of keys and garage door controllers for your old house.

Medicine & Prescriptions

Singaporean authorities are very strict when it comes to taking any type of medication into their country. You must notify the authorities that you intend to do this before you leave your current country of residence and obtain a prescription and letter from your doctor. The process may take a few days so don’t leave it until the last minute.

Visit Singapore

If you’re transferring for work a visit to Singapore before you move there will help make your life easier once you arrive. It will give you the chance to explore the best areas for expats and familiarise yourself with transport services. If you have children, you can visit schools and find the best learning centre for your little ones.

Seek Local Information

Look for groups of expats in Singapore, which you can join or activities that interest you. Once you arrive, there are plenty of ways to become involved in the local community to help you avoid feeling homesick. Contact Allied for more information on Expat groups and organisations or check our useful links page.
