Planning a move can be a titanic task, especially if it involves crossing an international border. Add lack of time to the mix and you have the perfect recipe for high stress levels. So how do you keep stress under control? The best way is to get on top of things is to plan early on.
Ask for Help
Relocating to or from Singapore might be a milestone in your life but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything on your own. If your company is asking you to make this change, talk to your boss about any relocation packages to which you might be entitled. If you have a family, everyone should be involved. Children can help pack their own things and select which toys or personal belongings to take. If you’re a solo traveller, ask friends or family to help you organise a garage sale or to pack the items you’re taking with you. Most importantly, hire a team of professionals.
When to Get Started
When it comes to moving, it is never too early to start planning. Ideally, you should do it in 12 weeks. If you have less time, it is even more important to get in touch with a moving company. They will send a moving coordinator to your home to talk about your requirements and set up a plan. Whether you are relocating to or from Singapore, they will take care of the paperwork for customs clearance and deal with the logistics of the move.
Create a Timeline
You will have a lot to do in the weeks leading up to your international move. After all, your work and family commitments won’t be on pause. It is easy to lose track of what to do and when, so designing a timeline can give you visual goals. You can have a weekly list of tasks. This will mostly work as a guideline so don’t stress if you can’t do everything you have planned in that week – at least it gives you a rough idea of what you need to be ticking off your moving list.
Know the Regulations and Restrictions
If you rush your move, you risk overlooking local Singaporean and international regulations and restrictions. Moving companies are not allowed to transport certain items so talk to your moving coordinator about what you can or cannot take. This is even more important if your new home is in some countries. There is a long list of restricted items and claiming ignorance will not save you from repercussions, which could include destroying the items and receiving a fine. If you’re taking a pet with you, you will need to carefully research the requirements to take them into the country you are moving to. Ask your mover if they can recommend a pet relocation specialist.
